The film The Color of Pomegranates by director Sergei Parajanov achieved a notable result at the South Korean box office, becoming a rare example of a successful commercial screening of a classic arthouse film.
According to data from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the film was released on November 26, 2025, and remained in theaters until February 2026. During this period it grossed $173,218 and attracted 25,190 admissions.
Earlier reports indicated that the film was screened on approximately 59 screens, which represents a relatively wide release for an archival or restored film.
For arthouse classics, such results are considered significant. The average ticket price was about $6.9, which corresponds to the standard cinema ticket price in South Korea.
The Color of Pomegranates, dedicated to the poet Sayat-Nova, is regarded as one of the key works of world cinema. The film is known for its unique visual language, symbolism, and poetic narrative style.
Additional attention to the screenings was drawn by RM, the leader of the K-pop group BTS, who mentioned on social media that he had watched the film. RM is known for his interest in contemporary art and auteur cinema, and his cultural recommendations often attract the attention of younger audiences.
In South Korea, The Color of Pomegranates is being screened in a restored 4K version. The film was restored within the framework of a project by The Film Foundation, founded by Martin Scorsese, in collaboration with Cineteca di Bologna, the National Cinema Center of Armenia, and Gosfilmofond of Russia, with financial support from the Material World Charitable Foundation.
